PrecisionPhage job listing
Bioinformatics Developer
We are seeking a mid-level or senior developer to join the PrecisionPhage bioinformatics division! In this role, you will participate in the creation and maintenance of modern GxP-level genomics software for the emerging bacteriophage field.
You can apply from both the angle of a biologist-turned-programmer or from the angle of a software-developer-interested-in-biology. Whichever you are, we want to hear from you!
This position is for applicants able to work remotely or hybrid within the standard office hours of European time zones.
This posting remains online until 31.12.2025, or until a suitable candidate is found.

Key responsibilities:
- Developing new functionalities for our existing SaaS phage bioinformatics solutions, mixing your own algorithms and pipelines with third-party tools.
 - Writing tests, benchmarking our software, and maintaining existing codebase.
 - Capability to adhere to agile-like working cycles and participating in necessary team meetings. We don't do daily stand-ups, don't worry!
 - Depending on your skillset, contribute to roles ranging from backend web developer and UI/UX to DevOps and security. While we are predominantly looking for a "backend bioinformatician", we are a startup and juggle many tasks, and are interested in hearing from your willingness to wear many hats!

Necessary qualifications:
- Extensive experience with Python (or with other languages and willing to transfer skills to Python) and ability to write clean, maintainable code.
 - Experience with Unix environments and with version control (Git).
 - Strong, demonstrable bioinformatics background from academia/industry or strong, demonstrable background from software development.
 - Capability to devise meaningful biological questions, translate them to code and report the resulting answers. If you're not a biologist, but are a quick learner with a grasp of basic scientific principles, problem solving and critical thinking, don't hesitate to apply!

Other required skills:
- Strong teamwork and collaboration abilities with the ability to communicate your work through discussions and presentations.
 - Excellent English communication skills, both written and oral.
 - Keen attention to detail and a mindset focused on continuous improvement.
 - Ability to work effectively remotely or hybrid.

Extra qualifications, in order of importance:
- Understanding of genomics, proteomics or any omics that are relevant to generating phage bioinformatics tools.
 - Knowledge of relevant command line tools and libraries for bioinformatics development.
 - Experience with Snakemake, Nextflow or similar pipeline framework.
 - Familiarity with data science and statistics, and relevant tools (R, pandas...)
 - Experience with project management.
 - Experience working in compliance-heavy environments, such as GAMP 5, ISO27001, SOC2, or HIPAA.
 - Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, particularly GitHub Actions.
 - Understanding of phage-bacterium interactions.
 - Experience in DevOps, especially infrastructure-as-code (Terraform, Ansible, Packer).
 - Understanding of basic SaaS architecture (Django).
 - Knowledge of agile methodologies and practices, without rigid adherence to Scrum ;)

Why join us?
- Opportunity to use your skills in building meaningful software in a friendly, geeky environment.
 - Flexible working hours, with possibility for 100% remote work or hybrid work in our offices in Jyväskylä or Turku, Finland.
 - Work in a lean startup environment without the rigidity of corporate bureaucracy (while acknowledging the posture required for GxP-level software development).
 - Make a direct impact on healthcare and research through your work.
